How is Welsh taught in a Welsh medium school?
When children begin learning Welsh, they will be immersed in the language from the start. They will learn how to understand basic instructions and phrases through visual support, song and actions.
Welsh is the language of education from nursery to Year 2 and then children will have lessons in English and Welsh, using both languages in their lessons across the curriculum. This is an internationally recognised method of learning languages and will help your child to become skilled and fluent in both languages.
What if we don’t speak Welsh as a family?
The majority of children attending Welsh medium schools in Wrexham come from non-Welsh speaking homes. The schools and supporting services are very familiar with supporting children/families from non-Welsh speaking homes.
While we would encourage you to take an interest in your child’s journey and can advise you on where to access locally run courses, there is no expectation on our part for you to learn Welsh.
All correspondence from Welsh medium schools is also sent out bilingually and we teach all children to become fully bilingual.
Events held at the school will be introduced bilingually and the Welsh medium school community prides itself on being an inclusive and supportive part of the local community.
You could also support your child and pick up some of the language yourself by:
- visiting your local library for Welsh books
- playing Radio Cymru or watching some S4C together (with subtitles)
- encouraging your child to use their Welsh if you come across a Welsh speaking person and in taking an interest in what they are learning
