The general election will be held on July 4, 2024.

In a general election you will vote for who you want to represent you in the UK Parliament. This person is your Member of Parliament (MP).

MPs are elected using the First Past the Post system. You vote once for a candidate in your constituency and the candidate with the most votes becomes your MP.

There are 650 MPs in the UK Parliament.

Each one represents a parliamentary constituency. As a resident of Wrexham County Borough, you will be voting to elect an MP in one of three constituencies:

  • Wrexham
  • Clwyd East
  • Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr

Constituency boundaries in the UK are changing. A new set of boundaries for Westminster constituencies will be used at the 2024 UK general election.

You can find out if your constituency has changed on the UK Parliament webpage:

What does your MP do?

Your MP represents your interests and concerns in the House of Commons.

MPs consider and can propose new laws as well as raising issues that matter to you. This includes asking government ministers questions about current issues including those which affect local constituents.

Voter ID

For the first time in a general election voters will need to show photo ID at the polling station. This will affect all voters who vote in person or by proxy.

Postal vote handling rules

  • Your postal vote will be rejected if it is not returned correctly.
  • The easiest and most convenient way to return your postal vote is by posting it in a Royal Mail post box using the pre-paid envelope provided (envelope B).
  • Please allow enough time for your postal vote to reach us through the post. It must be received by the local returning officer not later than 10pm on polling day.
  • If you are hand delivering your completed postal vote, for example at a polling station or the Guildhall, Wrexham (address on envelope B), you now need to complete a form. Our staff will help you with this.
  • You may hand deliver your own and no more than 5 other postal votes per election (6 in total).
  • If you are a political campaigner, you can only hand in your own postal vote, and those of close relatives or someone for whom you provide regular care.
  • Please do not leave your postal vote in any council office post box.

You can find out more information about the changes that take effect at this election on the changes to how you vote page.
