Once your application for British citizenship is approved by the Home Office you will be invited to attend a ceremony. In Wrexham, ceremonies are held at the Guildhall, at our register office. This is the final step on your journey to becoming a British citizen.

The aim of the citizenship ceremony is to enable applicants to gain a full understanding of the rights and responsibilities that come with British citizenship and also to ensure that they are properly welcomed into the community.

As a new citizen you will receive an email from the Home Office informing you that your application has been completed, at the same time the Home Office will send us your certificate.

Arranging and attending your ceremony

When you receive your email of approval from the Home Office, please contact us to book your ceremony date.

Email: citizenshipceremonies@wrexham.gov.uk

Please provide a telephone number and we will contact you to arrange your ceremony. You will then receive an email confirmation of the date and time of your ceremony.

You must attend the ceremony if you are over 18 years old and living in the UK. Children under 18 years old are not required to attend a ceremony, but are welcome to attend should you wish to bring them.

We are unable to book you in for a ceremony until we have received your certificate from the Home Office.

About citizenship ceremonies

What happens at a ceremony?

The ceremony begins with a welcoming speech. You will then be invited to swear an oath or make an affirmation of allegiance to His Majesty the King.

You will also make a pledge of loyalty to the United Kingdom before being presented with your citizenship certificate and gift from a local dignitary.

How do I apply for citizenship?

You will need to apply for British citizenship through the Home Office (a department of the UK government). Find out more about British citizenship, including how you can apply if you’re eligible, on the UK government website.

Can any applicant attend a ceremony in Wrexham?

Yes. Any person residing in the UK can choose to have their ceremony with us. To do this, simply indicate ‘Wrexham’ as your preferred ceremony location on your Home Office application form.

You are required to attend a ceremony within 90 days of the approval being given, otherwise you may have to make a new application.
