Our experienced playworkers aim to make it easier for Wrexham’s children to have opportunities to play.

We believe every child has a right to play but recognise that sometimes children may need support to access this right.

We are committed to allowing children access to enough time, space and permission to play.

What we do

We work with children, parents, community members, other council departments and other organisations.  As a team we can:

  • give advice on setting up play provision and play streets
  • provide support and advice on making settings more playful 
  • offer advice and support to other childcare and playwork organisations

Play sufficiency grant (funding for settings)

Please note applications for the play sufficiency grant are currently closed. 

This grant is open to any organisations or groups working with or in support of children and their play in Wrexham.

You can apply for up to £2,000 for your organisation or group. However, our Play and Youth Support Team will decide the amount awarded (depending on the demand for funding and the suitability of applications received).

Playwork qualifications and training

We offer a range of playwork qualifications for either practicing playworkers or people wanting to become a playworker.

All qualifications we offer are recognised by Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW). 

Our team can also offer non-accredited training on topics such as ‘reframing behaviour’ and ‘managing risk’.

We are happy to help and suggest which course will be useful to you or your organisation.

Inclusion project

This project provides extra support to children so that they can attend play provision. 

Children do not need to have a formal diagnosis to receive support and parents can self-refer if they wish. 

Each child is allocated a playworker who will keep an eye on the child and offer support if it is needed.

Support for parents

The team is made up of experienced trained playworkers and many of them are also parents. They are a friendly team who can offer advice on children’s play needs, either over the phone or in person.

The team also often runs parent groups.

We are open to suggestions and are happy to take on new projects that support children to play. If you are a parent, a professional or a child with an idea feel free to get in touch to let us know.
